A positive assessment for the Volunteer Cooperation Program in Haiti

By Carole Martin

After a slow beginning, the Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) in Haiti has taken flight since last January in favour of democratic elections, a concerted action between the United Nations force and the Haitian Government, and a coordinated, important support from the backers of the funds, namely Canada.

The first voluntary advisers that got involved in the program established quality mandates in terms of support, coaching and/or training alongside the partners of VCP. The evaluation reports show this. They equally reflect the efficiency of the management system established in the field.

Among the successes of the program, let us mention those in ISO norms, business plans, management of production and creation of sewing patterns, decentralisation of governmental planning and regulation of external business at the central level. The volunteer advisers who recently travelled to Haiti would tell you as well that the security situation has greatly improved since last year.

The opportunities that are being offered to the VAs in the next months consist namely of quality control assignments, website creations and data base management, women entrepreneurship, marketing and men’s clothing industry, etc. Notice to all who are interested!

Let us finally mention the arrival of a new person responsible for the component of VCP managed by CESO, at Port-au-Prince since April. This would be Madeleine Valentine, who brings with her a big experience in governance and private sectors as well as in international relations in developing countries.
